A Beagles Diet

Know Your Dog

When hunting or running we require high carbohydrate snacks because we burn calories at an exceptional rate during times of stress or work. Like other breeds, we are unable to store the carbohydrate to burn for this energy and a heavy demand on our protein energy stores can cause muscle cramping. We also will require larger intakes of water during times of stress or work.  I get very thirsty after a good training session!

Beagles originated in an area of England where its primary food sources would have been beets, potatoes, mutton, wheat, corn, rabbit, and poultry. Thus a blend of these foods, which are high in carbohydrates and have a high fat to protein ratio, would be the ideal base diet for the Beagle. Conversely, the worst blend would contain fish, rice, beef or beef by-products or soy.

Daddy Says!
"Do not feed this breed of dog any supplemental vitamin C (ascorbic acid, sodium ascorbate, calcium ascorbate or ascorbal palmitate) because of the kidney and liver damage it can do."

Now as hunting with us Beagles is something not too many of you humans do these days you would be interested to know how to feed a Beagle that is kept as a companion, because we love our food.

The link is from Pedigree Chum and if you ignore the marketing it is actually very interesting.

Do not be tempted to over feed or feed too many tit bits to your Beagle.  A mix of a wet and dry diet seems the most popular with breeders.  My breeder Lynda Havard recommends wet food in the morning and in the afternoon a snack of dry.  Lynda has been breeding Crufts champions for 20 years so i would take her word on it, she has done well so far.

The main things are no human chocolate or vitamin C supplementsand feed the dog the right food for its age and activity level. I would not feed just dry food to any breed of dog as this can lead to skin and organ problems.  They will also get very bored of it.  Wet food will be tasty and help with fluids for your dog.

Dont Leave It Out
Do not leave your dogs food out all day take it away 10 minutes after you place it down, this will keep you dog hungry if he decides not to eat and put him in a routine.  Most importantly he will see you as the provider and dominant pack leader.
